The Most ‘Instagrammable’ Honeymoon Hot-Spots

By Meriel Killeen – Features Editor

So it’s your honeymoon…time to crank up the romance and be, well all ‘moony’ with each other. Strike that!! It’s all about getting a fabulous feed folks!

What could be better? The two of you, tanned, toned and totally lapping up that sunset (whilst finding the right filter). Boomeranging your breakfast Bellinis like a pro and spending hours trying to get that peachy bum shot by the pool. Yes, modern day mooners, it’s all about the insta-life and here’s our guide to the top locations that will help push your likes #offthescale

When wandering through the streets of the French capital its hard not to trip over the many famous landmarks sprinkled throughout the city like icing sugar on a fresh pain-aux-chocolat. A serene boat trip down the Seine, the mesmerising evening light display of the Eiffel Tower or watching the sunset on the steps of Sacre-Coeur, Paris is the ultimate romantic getaway. (It evokes such strong feelings of love in fact, in 2014 part of a bridge adorned with love-locks collapsed under the weight!) One tip for the perfect instagram snap in Paris? Avoid the queues to climb the Eiffel Tower and instead pay a visit the panoramic rooftop at the decadent shopping centre, Galeries Lafayette. This way you ensure the iconic Eiffel Tower is in shot, whilst having more room for some equally iconic loved-up poses. And for those making their honeymoon into a trip for the whole family (or just closeted big-kids at heart) what better place to toast the beginning of your happily ever after than at Disneyland Paris…

Another location that couldn’t be missed off. Greek islands one of the most lusted after locations, incredible sunsets, white washed buildings, cobbled streets

One of the most lusted-after getaway locations, Santorini is just one of many Greek islands that boast hillsides of white-washed walls and cobbled streets, bathed in unrivalled sunsets and populated with the friendliest locals. Greece offers a honeymoon for just about every type of couple. Keen gym bunnies? Some of the most breathtaking (and little-known) views can be taken in on one of the many impressive hikes offered throughout the islands. Passionate foodies? I’ve got one word for you – gyros. And for those just looking for a little bit of R&R after the stress of planning your perfect nuptials, you can wash down an afternoon of tranquil sunbathing with a cold bottle of Mythos – Yiamas!

Cappadocia (Turkey)

You’ll struggle to find anything more breathtaking than Cappadocia at sunrise. A candy-floss sky dotted with colourful clusters of hot air balloons, this small region in Central Anatolia provides the backdrop for the stoic journeys of these gentle giants across the perfectly-named Love Valley. But hot air ballooning isn’t the only thing to do here. Centuries of fascinating history to be discovered in underground cities, traditional Turkish baths, hikes and quad-biking tours make Cappadocia the perfect destination for any adventurous romantics. We’d recommend booking into Sultan Cave Suites for jaw-dropping accommodation that will have you searching for Genie’s lamp – all three wishes for more time here please?!

For the perfect honeymoon staycation, you just can’t beat good old Blighty – ideal for any couple whose romantic break wouldn’t be the same without their four-legged family members! Taking inspiration from Cameron Diaz in festive romance flick The Holiday, couples can experience the best of a crisp English winter in the postcard-perfect Cotswolds. Spend your days admiring quintessential Cotswolds real estate or taking long walks through neighbouring stately homes, not forgetting regular live music in traditional pubs, crackling log fires and countless hot chocolates – something’s got to warm up your fingers after a long day snapping photos!

Narrowing down any region of this perpetually charming country is like being asked to choose your favourite bridesmaid, but you’d be hard pressed to not find yourself surrounded by romantic scenery and gastronomical PARADISE anywhere you land in Italy. The Italian Instagram champion however is undoubtedly the Amalfi Coast. Colourful houses climb up steep hillsides, looking down on the assortment of parasols on the beaches below. A short boat trip from the Amalfi Coast is the beautiful island of Capri, which plays host to the ethereal Blue Grotto. As sunlight passes through a natural cavity in the rock, the reflection of the tranquil Mediterranean blue creates a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed!

Boracay, Phillipines

For those wishing to go slightly further afield, the Philippines is made up of a mind-boggling 7000 different islands for you to choose from and promises that idyllic combination of white beaches and turquoise waters. Don’t be fooled however – although this may seem like the perfect destination for those happy to bask on the sand with a Long Island Iced Tea (sounds perfect to me) the Phillipines is a thrill-seekers paradise, packed with adventures such as canyoning, surf schools, volcanoes, caves and scuba diving to marvel at their pristine coral reef – where you might just bump into a friendly whale shark or two. An alternative to Boracay? Palawan Island has repeatedly topped the list of the most beautiful tropical islands in the world – where do I sign up to judge that competition?

Mallorca’s capital city boasts world-famous shopping, Gothic cathedrals, and countless sandy beaches but it’s the hillside jewel of Valldemossa, tucked away in the Tramuntana mountains that really secures it’s #nofilterneeded status. Get lost for the day exploring Valldemossa’s winding cobbled streets and historic monasteries, which hosted composer Chopin and pioneering writer George Sand – so you’re in good company! Back in central Palma, Ristorante Cafe Murada provides the ultimate romantic dinner setting where you can raise a glass of Sangria to Palma’s impressive cathedral, painted in the glow of golden hour, while traditional street guitarists serenade you in Spanish song.

Whether you’re honeymooning in winter or summer, Banff is a Canadian jewel with stunning scenery in snow or sun. Heaven for any ski or hike-mad couples, Banff promises some of the best hit chocolate in the world, friendly locals, incredible wildlife and picture perfect snow-topped peaks. If you’re visiting in the summer months, an absolute must-visit is to the jaw-dropping, turquoise waters of Lake Louise which have to be seen to be believed! If you need any more convincing, served all over Banff is the Canadian delicacy of Poutine, better known to me and you as chips, cheese and gravy. Now where’s my passport…

For the couples who love to explore, renting a car for a Croatian road trip will be your idea of honeymoon paradise (especially if you’re a couple who’ve binged through a few series of Game of Thrones). With popular hot spots such as Zagreb, Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik and Istria and a country the quarter of a size of the UK, Croatia’s crystal clear waters and welcoming locals make it the perfect destination for the ultimate honeymoon roadtrip. What better than reliving your wedding day playlist while cruising along Croatia’s scenic coastal roads? One absolute must when visiting Croatia is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plitvice Lakes National Park – trust us, your insta feed will be thanking you later.

South Africa

There’s a reason why Elton John’s classic ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ has been named one of the most romantic movie songs of all time. Famed for fruitful vineyards, sprawling beaches, incredible hikes and of course its wildlife, South Africa provides the perfect backdrop for an adventurous couple who want a taste of everything on their honeymoon. Whether it be watching the sunrise over the vast national parks on a morning safari, or cruising up Table Mountain in a cable car, South Africa guarantees a unique and breath-taking honeymoon experience – and another opportunity for some Winter Sun for those honeymooning during the UK’s colder months.
